sorry but if any of you knew anything about WWII you would know that tanks aren't always defensive the Tiger tank was one of the foremost powerful offensive tanks of the war thank you very much.

I was merely eluding to that tank doesn't always mean defensive. Tanks in the sense of the war and this game just means a hard outer shell, but, definitely not meant as passive defensive. Tanks are awesome offensive power for the most part. Some people use the term tank as derogative of what they are or do thas all. I'm merely correcting them.

Mesmers and Rangers being useless is just a big myth, as for Assassins... Well, only stupid ones are useless.

This has nothing to do with the game--where the word "tank" got its roots is completely irrelevant, all that matters is what it's used to mean now: a character whose primary (and often sole) purpose is to soak up aggro and damage.
And I guess tanks are useful for shitty PUGs. Better groups will use the superior defensive options available.

That, and the fact that in PvE it's generally faster to just not bother with a tank and rip things apart with a couple of Eles, Rits, Necros.. than wait for a tank to set up, gain aggro, and allow nuking to commence. The UW may be an exception to the rule... The Four Horsemen... *shudders*
What a "tank" is seems to be lost on many people anyway... People ask for "tanks" in PuGs - and seem to think a tank should just be a warrior who is strong enough to be the last one alive in a partywipe situation. It's bizarre...PuGs demand tanks...then the Eles run in ahead of the tank anyway. "I CAN TANK 2 COZ I HAV STONE DAGGERS MIRITE???".

If someone ask my warrior with nice armor and nice weapons to STAND THERE AND LET THE MONSTERS HIT, you can ask that person to GET SOMEONE ELSE.
Warrior's weapons are the most expensive in game, and they are meant to be used to hit, not to BE HIT.

Back on topic, in PVE, if your definition of "tank" is to use a build that will keep the enemy from doing too much damage to your backline, then consider this:
14 hammer
13 strength
For Great Justice
Flail
Earth Shaker
Pulverizing Smash
Crude Swing
Whirlwind Attack
Sight Beyond Sight
rez (flesh of my flesh or Death Pact)
Have a Rt/N or N/Rt hero for support, and make sure (s)he has these two skills:
Withering Aura
Weapon of Fury
(I have at times used Splinter Weapon instead, you just have to choose between more frequent knockdowns or higher DPS)
Then laugh as mobs sit on their assess over 50% of the time and melt away like hot butter. You've got IAS, massive AoE damage, AoE knockdown, deep wound, and AoE weakness. There's your offense and defense in one neat little package.

Warriors are generally useless unless they're running Illusionary Weaponry with a wand. 33 ranged damage that goes under prot ftw?

Tanks get the job done (it's PvE afterall - pretty much everything gets the job done here!) but there are just better options.
And since one can only have a limited amount of players in a party - we gravitate towards the best option.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with playing a tank in PvE! If you like it - do it!
Just know that if you like playing with people - playing a tank will automatically ruin your chance to take part in parties you'd want to play in.
Good ones.

Having played a necro first, then moved onto a mesmer (those 2,5+ years ago) - and capped IW - I thought it was going to be the best elite ever!
40 damage with my wand!
I cast it - and then freak out because it was "bugged"!
Some of the mesmer skills look so bloody insane - but then you read the fine print - (like Channeling in PvE! At first I thought that the range was earshot! ) and then you go - WTF!??!?!??
